How to choose the right e-commerce platform
Shopify, WooCommerce or custom: how to choose a store foundation from catalogue, content and operations — not from a feature list.
Start with how you sell, not with the logo of a platform
E-commerce platforms are infrastructure. They are not a brand, a theme or a growth strategy. The right choice depends on the catalogue, the content around the products, checkout needs and who will run the store after launch.
Shopify is excellent for many catalogues. WooCommerce can be better when WordPress content or an existing stack is the constraint. A custom build is for cases where the product itself is the software. None of those sentences is a slogan. They are filters.
When Shopify is usually the stronger foundation
Choose Shopify when you want a commerce engine that already handles cart, checkout, payments and a large app ecosystem — and when the brand work will happen in the storefront, not in a fight with the platform.
It is the wrong default when your site is mostly editorial, when you are already deep in WordPress in a way that would be expensive to leave, or when you need behaviour Shopify cannot express without a pile of apps.
Shopify is a platform. It is not an alternative to a studio. A theme with the logo swapped is still a theme. Custom Shopify development is the difference between renting a look and owning the experience.
When WooCommerce is the cleaner fit
Choose WooCommerce when products and long-form content belong in the same system, or when the business already runs on WordPress and the catalogue is a natural extension of that stack.
The risk is weight. WooCommerce stores get slow when every problem is solved with another plugin. If you choose it, choose a lean build: few dependencies, designed product templates and a maintenance plan.
When to consider custom — and when not to
Custom commerce makes sense when checkout, cataloguing or customer flows are the product. It is a poor choice when you mainly need a reliable cart and would spend the budget reinventing payments.
Web Dream recommends the platform after the product and operations are clear. If you already have a store, the question may be optimize, redesign or migrate — not “which homepage template looks newest.”
